Stan Walerczyk - How Low Can You Go?Date: 09-15-2009, Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm Location: World Trade Center -121 SW Salmon St, PortlandHow Low Can You Go?
What do think is a low power density in a typical office, including ambient and task lighting – 1.2, 1.0, 0.8, 0.6 or 0.4 watt per square foot? How many horizontal footcandles should there be a on a typical office desk from just ambient lighting – 60, 50, 40, 30, 20 or 10? We will address these issues and also discuss how high Kelvin and high performance T8s, extra efficient fixed output ballasts, one and two lamp 2x4 kits and fixtures, one lamp per cross section suspended indirect/direct fixtures and LED task lights can provide very low power densities, cost effectively, while providing very good lighting quality. Why basket troffers may be considered the parabolics of this decade will be included.
Stan Walerczyk
Stan Walerczyk is principal of Lighting Wizards, a consulting firm. His 20+ years lighting experience includes distribution, maintenance, retrofit contracting, 3rd party review, consulting, design and research. Naomi Miller - "Light + Design: A Guide to Designing Quality Lighting for People and Buildings"Date: 01-20-2010, Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm Location: Plaza Conference Room - World Trade Center -121 SW Salmon St, PortlandLight + Design: A Guide to Designing Quality Lighting for People and Buildings
By Naomi Miller, FIES, FIALD, LC
The purpose of Light + Design is to introduce lighting professionals to the principles of quality lighting design. These principles, related to visual performance, energy and economics, and aesthetics, can aid designers in providing high-quality lighting for a wide range of interior and exterior lighting projects.
The text is divided into four parts:
1.
Light + Human Needs describes the principles and technical background involved in designing lighting that satisfies vision and visual comfort needs,
2.
Light + Economics & Environment deals with economic and environmental factors related to quality design,
3.
Light + Architecture addresses lighting the built environment, and
4.
Light + Application presents an updated and excerpted portion of the IESNA Design Guide, introduced in the IESNA Lighting Handbook, 9th Ed.
Supplementing the Design Guide are questions that provide a checklist of critical issues to lighting projects and an applications guide. Numerous sketches and photographs, glossary, and end notes that reference other technical papers and IES publications are included.

European Lighting - From Regulations to the Mona Lisa - Dr. Marc FontoynontDate: 02-05-2010, Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm Location: Sky Bridge A&B - World Trade Center - 121 SW Salmon St, Portland 97204
Title: As of 2020 new buildings in Europe will be required to consume 'nearly zero' energy and the energy will 'to a very large extent' come from renewable sources. This is about 10 years ahead of the target for the North America 2030 Challenge. Dr. Fontoynont will discuss the implications of the directive, especially with regard to lighting design and technology. He will discuss some of his recent high profile lighting design projects, such as the Mona Lisa, the Eiffel Tower, the Chinese Expo 2010, European Museums and Commercial Centers. He will present his recent involvement in an international programme to rate performance of LED products.
About Dr Marc Fontoynont: Dr Marc Fontoynont is Professor and Director of the Building Science Laboratory of Franceâs National School of Public Works in Lyons. He is also and Vice-President of the Commission Internationale de LâÃclairage.
Dr Marc Fontoynont is active in both lighting research and design, having played a leading role in projects such as the Mona Lisa, the Eiffel Tower, the Tsaritsino Museum (Moscow) and Shanghai Expo 2010.

Date: 02-25-2010, Time: 11:30am - 1:00pm Location: Oregon Museum of Science - OMSI Auditorium - 1945 SE Water Ave, Portland, OR 97214Light Pollution
“Any adverse effect of artificial light including sky glow, glare, light trespass, light
clutter, decreased visibility at night, and energy waste.” (IDA)
Published studies are revealing that the light pollution generated by our 24/7 lifestyle is beginning to wreak havoc on human health and safety, plant and wildlife behavior and mortality, our
energy resources, and our heritage of dark sky observation.
This luncheon symposium is designed to initiate a discourse on light pollution ‐‐ its menace to
a sustainable Portland Metropolitan Area ‐‐ and the measures available to reduce its
adverse effects. Three speakers from the wildlife, astronomical, and lighting community who are
active participants in the campaign to promote more responsible outdoor lighting will “efficiently enlighten” the audience on this important issue. We anticipate that this will be the first in a series of symposiam to bring this issue
into the public forum.

However, as with any new technology, there are many embellished claims of performance. How does a designer know how to separate real claims from the hype? This presentation will provide an overview of LED technology with a focus on how to differentiate between products. Specifically, what type of information that a lighting professional should require of any & all manufacturers proposing an LED solution. Furthermore, this presentation will cover some best case applications as well as review the tools available for specifiers to make an informed decision on this technology.
About the presenter:Andrew Lindstrom has over 14 years in the lighting industry. He is lighting certified, and has held a wide range of product management and sales positions with General Electric and Cooper Lighting. He has been a member of the IESNA for over a decade both as Vice President of the Des Moines, IA chapter and is currently serving on the Sports lighting & Roadway committees. Currently, he is with Philips Lighting as the North American Development Manager for SSL lamps.
