Light and Physiology/Psychology
Date: 01-29-2011, Time: 10:00am - 12:00pm
Location: U of O White Stage Building, 70 NW Couch, Portland, Oregon

This course will enable attendees to understand how medical practitioners have used melatonin and bright light to treat circadian sleep and mood disorders. There are two categories for these disorders: phase advanced and phase delayed.

The prototypical patient with SAD (seasonal affective disorder, or winter depression) is phase delayed; however, some are phase advanced. Shift work maladaptation, non-seasonal major depressive disorder and ADHD can also be individually phase typed and then treated with a phase-resetting agent at the appropriate time.

Phase-advanced disorders are treated with evening bright light exposure and/or low-dose morning melatonin administration. Phase-delayed disorders are treated with morning bright light and/or low-dose afternoon/evening melatonin administration. High doses of melatonin can be given at bedtime to help some people sleep.

A jet lag treatment algorithm will be presented that takes into account the direction and number of time zones crossed, for when to avoid and when to obtain sunlight exposure at destination and when to take low-dose melatonin before and after travel.

About Dr. Lewy

In the early 1980s, Al Lewy, M.D., Ph.D., Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, established that exposure to bright light can reset out-of-phase body clocks in the sighted. This treatment, however, was not an option for the totally blind.

Dr. Lewy instead applied his work on the role of melatonin in sleep to the problem of regulating sleep patterns in the blind.

The accumulated knowledge delivered by Lewy’s thirty years of research in melatonin regulation has now defined a new field – Chronobiology. Chronobiologists measure the sleep cycles of any blind or sighted individual, and offers bright light therapy or micro doses of melatonin to regulate these cycles where they deviate from the 24-hour norm.

Dr. Lewy is now focusing his attention on mental health conditions in which sleep disorders are prevalent. “We’re starting to look at children and adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, non-seasonal depression and other psychological disorders. Regulating their sleep is not a cure for their condition, but it might help mitigate the contribution that disrupted sleep makes to the severity of their symptoms.”

Alfred Lewy, M.D., Ph.D. is the Richard H. Phillips Professor of Biological Psychiatry in the department of psychiatry; senior vice chair of the department; and director of the Mood Disorders Research Laboratory.

Optical Design Challenges for Emerging Sources

Greg has been with Holophane 27 years. In that time he has been Manager of Application Engineering, Manager of Optical Design and Testing, Engineering Manager in the Innovation Group and is currently Director of Lighting Education. He has been awarded 17 patents for various optical innovations. Greg has two Masters degrees, one from Penn State in Architectural Engineering and one from Ohio University in Business Administration. He has served actively in the IESNA since 1975 in various local and national capacities. He is currently chairing the IESNA Merchandise Lighting Committee and has formerly chaired the Conference Papers Committee, the Office Lighting and the Computer Committees. Greg has guest lectured at the University of Wisconsin, Ohio State and Ohio University and at local, regional and national IESNA meeting and conferences including Lightfair.

The focus on source technology has lighting practitioners forgetting the fundamental strategies of light control. The LED, OLED, Plasma, high efficacy metal halide, and induction sources have inherent issues that challenge the optical designer. The problems are unique and yet resemble the classical visibility issues of the last 300 years of artificial lighting.

A professional optical engineer will describe the application of the technologies based on the source characteristics. The fundamental understanding of these issues will enhance the selection process on your next design assignment. Don’t miss this opportunity to hear the comments of an experienced hand at tackling these challenges.

A Prescription for LIGHT
Date: 01-20-2012, Time: 12:00pm - 1:30pm
Location: World Trade Center, Plaza Conference Room (street level), 121 SW Salmon St, Portland, Or

A Prescription for LIGHT

Exploring a Circadian Adaptive Lighting Protocol

The scientific evidence is overwhelming: environmental light has an unequivocal connection with human health and wellbeing. Unfortunately, very few design and engineering professionals understand the chronobiological connection, let alone, use its advanced principles in design practice. With clear anatomical references, and easy to understand graphics, this session will detail how environmental light directly affects key brain structures, specialized ocular receptors and overall metabolic function all the while proving to be a fundamental determinant of behavioral response, disease progression, and sleep.

Citing recent scientific understanding and cutting edge medical discoveries, Deborah will connect the dots between health, light and human metabolic costs while provoking group centered forward thinking as to the possible role lighting designers will play in assisting medical professionals as they treat and heal disease, prevent obesity, control cancer and turn on emotions and memories in lives once thought to be lost to Alzheimer’s and dementia. Attendees will also become acquainted with a proposed new lighting protocol which addresses specific circadian relevant needs of occupants confined away from high light levels of naturally provided light. During this fast paced one hour session attendees will be encouraged to:

  • Discover how evidence-based design specifications contribute in achieving effective sleep periods, positive health & healing outcomes, improved attention spans, and enhanced scholastic test results.
  • Investigate how the light/ health connection physiologically and neurologically functions and why specific wavelengths are ‘hard wired’ to control human metabolic functions, disease response rates, and genetic expression
  • Learn how the newly discovered iPRGC cells in the eye function to transport environmental light through to the major biological clock thus affecting key neurological functions and disease sensitive metabolic processes and why our A&D specifications can either inhibit or support these functions
  • Uncover how evidence-based daytime lighting conditions play a critical role in achieving nighttime sleep quality as well as reducing work shift fatigue levels.
  • Engage in an ‘out of the box’ discussion as to the possible role design professionals and engineers will play as an integral member of the health care support team charged with the directive “first do no harm”
  • Explore the relationship of ambient light with the increasing health related problems of obesity, heart disease, and breast cancer while exploring new and creative ways to solving the modern day dilemma of providing energy efficient, but yet health supportive light, for a culture who thrives on the 24/7 adrenaline rush of light at night, blue rich lighting technologies and the need to stay connected with light-based devices.
